Tips and resources from APTT Fall 2022
Below are reading tips we discussed at the Fall, September 14, 2017 APTT meeting.
Nightly reading A-Z online books
Bob books and phonics readers (available in scholastic catalogs)
Ask questions and reflect while reading
Track words with finger while reading
Partner reading: children sound out words with support when necessary and parents read tricky words
LIsten and Repeat (Parent reads while child listens, then child reads what was just read while parent listens and supports)
Re-read books and learn to identify familiar words
Car games: rhyming, letter sounds, beginning letter in a word, separate sounds in a word e.g. "dog"= d-o-g
Read street signs, banners, logos, recipes, songs, things of interest
Foam letters in bath
Flash cards
Trace letters on back and guess letters or short words
Download apps to phone that support: letter writing, alphabet recognition, letter sounds... ABC mouse
Rewards
If mistakes are made, correct, and reread
Encourage, support, build confidence, and create positive relationship with reading
